AC Repair or Replace Calculator

Georgia HVAC Repair built this calculator to help you weigh a repair quote against replacing your air conditioner. Enter your own details and see which factors point each way, with the source for each one. It doesn't make the decision for you, because no single rule fits every home.

      Where these factors come from

      • Age and repair history: ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement if a heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old or needs frequent repairs, and says properly installed ENERGY STAR equipment can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs (ENERGY STAR).
      • R-22: new R-22 hasn't been produced or imported in the U.S. since January 1, 2020. Systems can still be serviced with reclaimed R-22, but the EPA notes supplies are limited and costs may rise (EPA).
      • Costs: HomeAdvisor puts central AC installation at $3,887–$8,073 (average $5,978), and common repairs from a $120–$475 capacitor to a $1,200–$2,800 compressor (installation, repairs).

      What this calculator can't see

Your ductwork, the size of the system compared with the house, the condition of the indoor unit, warranty coverage on the failed part, and local prices. A good contractor will look at those before recommending either option. See our AC repair vs. replacement guide and the Georgia AC repair cost guide.

      Questions

      Repair or replace questions

Is there a rule for when to replace an air conditioner?

No single rule fits every home. ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement if a heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old or needs frequent repairs. The size of the repair, the refrigerant, comfort, and your power bills all matter too.

How much does a new central AC cost?

HomeAdvisor's data puts central AC installation at $3,887 to $8,073, averaging $5,978. Size, efficiency, ductwork, and whether a furnace or air handler is replaced too all change the price. Get written quotes from licensed contractors.

Should I replace an AC that uses R-22?

Not automatically. The EPA doesn't require replacing R-22 systems, and they can be serviced with reclaimed refrigerant. But new R-22 hasn't been made since 2020, so a refrigerant leak in an older R-22 system often makes replacement the better value.
