Interactive tool: the visitor enters system age, repair quote, failed part, refrigerant type, and repair history. Each answer is sorted into factors pointing toward repair or toward replacement, with sources. It gives no verdict.

## Factors and sources

- Age: ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement if a heat pump or AC is more than 10 years old or needs frequent repairs; certified equipment can save up to 20% on heating and cooling (https://www.energystar.gov/saveathome/heating-cooling/replace).
- R-22: no new production or import in the U.S. since January 1, 2020; reclaimed R-22 is still used for service, but supplies are limited (EPA).
- Costs (HomeAdvisor 2026): central AC installation $3,887–$8,073, average $5,978; capacitor $120–$475; refrigerant leak repair $225–$1,600; evaporator coil $600–$2,000; compressor $1,200–$2,800.
